Jogga chess tourney underway

Jamshedpur, Sept. 21: Kaushik Das of Narbheram Hansraj English School (NHES) emerged as the sole leader in the senior boys? section on the second day of the sixth Jamshedpur Old Girls and Guys Association (Jogga) inter-school chess tournament at SDSM School for Excellence today.

Das took the lead with four points in his kitty, after Dhruva Ranjan of Motilal Nehru Public School (MNPS) conceded defeat in just 12 moves in the fourth round. Ranjan has so far managed three points.

A pack of five players ? A.B. Sharath Nair (MNPS), Mayank Jayaswal (DBMS), Aditya Bhushan (Vidya Jyoti School), Vineet Saraiwala and Harsh D. Shah (KSMS)? are behind with two points each in the senior boys? category while Ankit Agarwal (MNPS) has garnered 2.5 points.

In the junior boys? section fourth round tie, the two old rivals, Sourav Das of NHES and Anirban Pati of Carmel Junior College faced each other again on the top board. The game tilted when Pati made a mistake on move 17 and lost a pawn. Das, who was otherwise playing well, made a mistake on move 44 in a winning end game to let victory slip out of his hand. He agreed for a draw.

In the second board, Eshan Patra (MNPS) drew again with schoolmate Pratim Bagchi.

In the senior girls? category Suryabala Sah (NHES) defeated Stuti Sen (Sacred Heart Convent School) to lead the pack with four points to give her opponent a comfortable win.
