Body found in hospital quarters

The body of a 25-year-old youth was found in an abandoned quarters behind the gynaecology ward of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Monday afternoon. Alerted by the stink emanating from the house, hospital employees launched a search and stumbled upon the body. Tallah police station was immediately informed and the body was sent for post-mortem. Police suspect the youth had entered the abandoned quarters a few days ago to steal copper wires and was electrocuted.

Three held for clash

Three persons were arrested on Monday in connection with a clash in Bhowanipore on Sunday night. Police said violence broke out after a promoter sent two ?musclemen to appropriate? a garage on DL Khan Road, under Kalighat police station. Local residents said two persons had sustained bullet injuries. Trinamul leader Mamata Banerjee had to rush to the spot to bring the situation under control. Police were attacked when they reached the spot.

African eagle

A rare African eagle with an eight-inch-long beak alighted on the roof of a house in Jagaddal, on the northern fringes of the city, on Sunday. One of its wings was wounded. Both police and the forest department were alerted. A doctor who attended to the bird said the injury might have been caused by a gunshot. He also said the eagle was suffering from diarrhoea. It did not eat anything on Monday.

Youth missing

Sanjay Sau, 18, has been missing from Sarbamangala ghat, where he went with his friends to see immersion of Vishwakarma idols, since Sunday night. He is a resident of BT Road.

Girl rescued

A patrol team from New Market police station rescued a 21-year-old girl in front of Indian Museum late on Sunday and handed her over to her parents on Monday. fficers said the girl and her friends had come from Nakashipara, in Nadia, to get a taste of the city?s nightlife. They had spent the night in a discotheque. Around 12.30 am, after her friends left, she failed to make her way to Sealdah station, from where the group was supposed to catch a train to Nakashipara. The girl?s father had lodged a missing person diary.

Airport arrests

Two men were arrested at the airport on Sunday night for allegedly travelling with false passports. Officials said Kulbinder Singh, from Jalandhar, and his companion Bhag Singh were arrested minutes before they were to board a flight to Kuala Lumpur.

Road death

A 45-year-old pedestrian died after being hit by an unidentified vehicle in front of Jadubabur bazar, in Bhowanipur, on Monday evening. The victim was taken to SSKM Hospital, where he died.

Suicide

Ataul Karim Asif, 32, committed suicide by setting himself on fire at his sister?s house, in Beniapukur, on Sunday afternoon. He was a resident of Mofidul Islam Lane. He was rushed to hospital, where he died.

Mill unrest

Some workers of a jute mill in Shyamnagar, on the northern fringes of the city, allegedly ransacked the main office and the apartment of an official on Sunday. he workers also damaged two cars. The mill authorities have lodged a police complaint. A leader of the workers? union said the management had prevented a worker of the spinning division from entering the premises, as he was late by three minutes. An altercation broke out between workers and officials, which snowballed into a clash.
