Vellore: University of Calcutta emerged All India Inter University Chess champions and lifted the Karan Singh Trophy with an emphatic victory over Visveswaraya Technological University (VTU), Belgaum, in the ninth and final round on Thursday.
The champions tallied a total of 27.5 points.
Calcutta spearheaded by International Master Deep Sen Gupta won three games on board one, two and four while the third board player Prasant Dutta survived some anxious moments before settling for a draw against IM Chitra Sridhar of VTU.
Madurai Kamaraj University, which were having a dream run during final phase of the tournament, were held by Madras University 2-2 and had to be content with the runners-up position, having a final score of 27 points.
Last years runners-up Osmania were relegated to third spot with 26 points. (PTI)
