Airport arrest

Calcutta, Sept. 10:A Nigerian was arrested at Calcutta airport today for allegedly travelling with a false passport. The 28-year-old was intercepted by immigration officials while he was boarding a flight to Malaysia and was handed over to the airport police.

Another Indian passenger was also detained while boarding Air-India’s Calcutta-London flight and is being interrogated, officials said.

Tantrik lynched

Barrackpore: A 43-year-old tantrik was lynched by residents of the area at Budbud in North 24-Parganas, about 20 km from Calcutta, on Friday night after he attempted to sacrifice his 20-year-old nephew, Haridas Baidya, before Kali with the help of his wife Ashima. Police have detained the tantrik’s wife for interrogation.

Monkey row

Krishnagar: A high school teacher and his son were beaten up on Saturday morning for allegedly killing and burning several monkeys at Santipur of Nadia district, 70 km from Calcutta. Residents of the area had rushed to the spot alerted by the odour.

Undertrial held

West Midnapore: Prakash Jana, an undertrial prisoner who escaped from the Midnapore Medical College and Hospital on Friday, was arrested from Narandevi village in East Midnapore on Saturday morning. Jana has been sent back to the Midnapore central jail, police officials said.

Goons in net

Barasat: Police arrested four extortionists from the Railpukur area of Baguihati on Friday night. Police said the miscreants had assembled at a field to chalk out a blueprint for their operations. All of them are wanted on the charge of threatening a witness to a murder of a trader.

Pranab protest

Calcutta: Defence minister and state Congress president Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday led a padyatra at Canning in South 24-Parganas to protest against the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government’s move to hand over farmland to the Indonesia-based Salim Group. Mukherjee said the party would launch a movement across Bengal if attempts were made to take away agricultural from poor and marginal farmers.

Zanskar ban

Jammu (PTI): Zanskar in Ladakh will soon be opened to visitors, with the Buddhist Youth Association lifting the seven-month bthe decision in the hope that their demands would be met soon.
