Rainwater relief for builders

Jamshedpur, Sept. 9: Builders of the steel city can look forward to combat the receding water level by adopting some simple methods of rainwater harvesting.

K.R. Gopinath, an internationally acclaimed expert on the subject, explained the methods of preserving water at a seminar on rainwater harvesting today.

The seminar was organised by the city chapter of the Builders? Association of India (BAI). ?India is among the nine countries in the world which holds 90 per cent of water. We have sufficient water but don?t know how to manage it. There are simple methods of rainwater harvesting can have significant results,? Gopinath, who has watched water preservation techniques from close quarters in several countries, pointed out.

He said impact of global warming and climatic conditions are the two vital components of receding water level.

?We may come across a problematic situation if attention is not paid to rain water harvesting,? Gopinath said, while lining up several methods of natural water preservation. He explained the methods of rainwater harvesting through animation films.

From roof water harvesting to percolation pits in open areas, Chennai-based Gopinath, who has been invited by Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh governments to solve water crisis in municipal areas, popped up ideas during the seminar. He said rainwater harvesting could also be done on road dividers.

?This method is prevalent in China. Instead of allowing water go waste on roads, we can harvest it on road dividers. Besides, we can also make percolation pits for it,? he added.

The expert also dwelt at length the benefits of roof water harvesting. In a country where lot of water is wasted, roof water harvesting is a must, Gopinath said.
