Prize wise

How does it feel to be a the designer of a $170,000 tennis trophy while just in class VIII? Ask Ipsita Saha (picture above). The student of St John’s Diocesan School in Calcutta has just become the proud winner of a contest for designing the trophy of the Sunfeast Open, to be held in Calcutta from September 19-25. Ipsita’s design (picture below) was chosen out of over 10,000 entries that came in from students of various schools in the city. So how did it feel to win the prize, which was a certificate and a computer? “I was informed I had won a day before the actual prize distribution ceremony at the St Xavier’s auditorium in Calcutta. Naturally, I was very excited and it felt great to go up and collect the prize in front of so many people,” says Ipsita. It goes without saying that Ipsita’s parents, as well as her kid sister who is in class I, are pleased as punch. It also helped that Ipsita loves to wield the paintbrush. “I thought that since it was a women’s tennis tournament, it would be best to put the figure of a woman poised on a tennis racquet and ball,” she adds. And what are her other interests? “I love athletics, especially high jump and long jump. I love geography. I also like maths ? but not all the topics,” says the little champion, laughing. And with the likes of Anastasia Myskina and Sania Mirza being present for the tournament, there’s every chance she will pick up a lot more than what her textbooks can teach her.
