Khasi students make peace, Garos peeved

Shillong, Sept. 1: Khasi organisations showed signs of making peace following the state-level committee?s recommendations on restructuring of the Meghalaya Board of Secondary Education but Garo groups made no bones of their resentment.

The Khasi Students? Union (KSU), which has been agitating for the restructuring of the board, and the 21 organisations supporting it called off their agitation today and decided to co-operate with the government to streamline the board?s functioning.

The tone was different in the Garo hills with a few non-government organisations yet to accept the recommendations in its present form. The Garo Students? Union (GSU) and the Garo Hills Citizen?s Forum (GHCF) called a rally today to discuss the report.

In its report submitted on August 29, the committee had suggested several measures to revamp the board like appointment of a full-time executive chairman to head the board in Tura with directors and officers of the same rank to head its four wings ? administrative, finance, academic and accreditation and examination. It also suggested setting up of a regional office in Shillong under a director to cater to the needs of the Khasi, Jaintia and Ri Bhoi districts.

KSU president Samuel Jyrwa told reporters after a meeting with chief minister D.D. Lapang that all the agitating NGOs had unanimously agreed to accept the recommendations of the committee. ?The report is comprehensive and we will cooperate with the government to implement the recommendations.?

Later, Lapang said he was considering the release of the KSU members who were booked under the Meghalaya Preventive Detention Act for causing ?public disorder?.

He appealed to the NGOs in Garo hills to cooperate with the government. ?The office of the state education board in Tura has not been diluted in any way and I am sure the NGOs in Garo hills will agree. There is some confusion, but no one is negative about the recommendations.?

In Garo hills, there were differences among the NGOs over the committee?s recommendations. Sources said the GHCF has agreed to accept the recommendations after a thorough study of the contents.

Deputy chief minister Mukul Sangma met GSU president Andreas Sangma today. ?The GSU leaders agreed to study the report,? he said.
