IA helpline moves beyond metros

Customers now need to dial a single toll-free number to contact Indian Airlines from anywhere in the country. The move extends the reach of the airline?s existing round-the-clock Flight Helpline number 1407, which was restricted to only six metros. ow, one has to dial 1600-180-1407 for any information, including flight departure/arrival, fares, seat availability, telephonic reservation and booking status. While MTNL and BSNL subscribers (of both landline/mobile phones) can avail of the service free from anywhere in the country, others need to prefix 1407 by the STD code of the nearest of the six metros ? Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. Call charges, however, will apply for availing of the STD route. Information from the helpline will be provided in Bengali, Assamese, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, English and Hindi.

Queries for schools

The 12-member committee set up by the state government to examine ways to regulate private English-medium schools offering ICSE and CBSE courses held its second meeting on Monday. After its first meeting on August 10, the panel had announced the government?s plan to categorise ICSE and CBSE schools based on the quality of education and facilities they offer. Monday?s meeting was held to prepare the questions the committee intends to ask guardians and teachers as part of the gradation exercise. The panel is likely to meet again next week.

Suicide

A 30-year-old man committed suicide on Monday morning by setting himself on fire at his Tangra Housing Estate residence. Police said neighbours saw smoke billowing out of Debasish Roy Chowdhury?s flat around 10.30 am. They immediately informed police, who broke open the flat?s door and found Roy Chowdhury?s charred body on the floor. No suicide note was found. Police said Roy Chowdhury was unemployed and lived alone.

Protest arrests

Sixteen rickshaw-pullers were arrested while they were demonstrating in front of the main gate of Writers? Buildings on Monday. They were protesting the government?s decision to ban handpulled rickshaws in the city. The protesters were sent to Lalbazar central lock-up, from where they were later released.

Malaria toll

Malaria death toll in Calcutta this year rose to four on Monday, with the death of 12-year-old Sonam Khatum and 48-year-old Sanat Kumar Sengupta. Last year, the toll was 12.

Garbage power

Two representatives from the American company ESS Group met chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Monday evening and appraised him of their technology in generating power from garbage. The firm is interested in taking up a project in Calcutta, Bhattacharjee said.

Trinamul defeat

The Trinamul Congress on Monday lost the chairmanship of borough VI to the CPM-supported Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate Bimal Singh. The RJD?s win was facilitated by the Congress, which announced Independent councillor Sabita Das as its candidate at the last moment. Trinamul leader in the civic body said his party?s allegation that ?the CPM and the Congress are two sides of the same coin? had been proved true. According to him, Sabita?s husband, Arun Das, was involved in manhandling Pranab Mukherjee at the Congress? state headquarters before the civic polls.
