Guwahati, Aug. 28: Last year?s runners-up Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) SC outclassed NF Railway Sports Club 4-1, while Jewel Star Club held Dynamo Club to a 1-1 draw in their respective matches of the Guwahati Super League today.
The powermen rode a brace each by Mani Kanta Brahma and Kamal Chetri to prevail over the railmen in the replay of the two teams? Wednesday?s match which was abandoned after 19 minutes of play because of a heavy downpour.
Brahma drew first blood with a header off a flag-kick by Sanjiba Rongpi in the 9th minute and Chetri consolidated the lead to 2-0 with a 38th minute goal capitalising on a defence lapse. He dribbled down the right flank unchallenged, into the opponents? danger zone. His shot from close range brushed NF Railway custodian K. Bijen Singh?s fingers before kissing the net.
However, NF Railway midfielder Thagit Sonowal reduced the margin to 1-2 four minutes later when his header off a half-volley from the right flank beat ASEB custodian Sankar Barman.
In the second session, ASEB continued their raids into opposition territory and Chetri found the net once again in the 50th minute with a long-ranger. Trailing by two goals, the railmen launched concerted efforts for retaliation. But even if they broke through the ASEB defence, they could not beat Barman.
With five minutes to go for the final whistle, Brahma pumped in the fourth goal. He received a centre by substitute Syed Ansar from the right flank and beat the Railway defence as well as custodian Singh with a powerful right footer.
In the second match, striker Rajeshwor Das gave Dynamo a scare with a goal as early as in 10th minute goal. He beat the advancing Dynamo keeper Subhas Naskar and deflected home a Rahajuddin Ahmed centre from the right flank.
Dynamo, who had been dominating in their earlier outings, found it difficult to knit a strategy against the Jewel attack today. Comeback man Six Birth, however, restored parity in the 22nd minute with a slow lob from inside the penalty area. Star glovesman Richard Choudhury watched helplessly as the ball landed right behind him into the net. The remaining minutes were goalless despite a high voltage offensives and counter-attacks.
On Saturday, holders Assam Police Blues came back from behind to clinch a 3-1 win over Gauhati Town Club. Town Club striker Bhaskar Jyoti Bora fashioned a lead in the 25th minute. The cops were trailing 0-1 at lemon break and the scoreline remained unchanged until a Rabijit Jigdung header equalised it in the 58th minute. With the match poised for a draw, Blues substitute Digen Das struck in the 85th minute and was followed by Jigdung a minute later.
