Rs 95-crore cement plant in Cachar

Silchar, Aug. 28: A Rs 95-crore cement plant will be set up in Assam?s Cachar district in a phased manner.

The Union heavy industries and public enterprises ministry has cleared a proposal by the public sector Cement Corporation of India (CCI) to set up a cement manufacturing plant in Katigorah block on the Indo-Bangladesh border.

To begin with, the plant will churn out 30 tonnes of cement everyday. Its capacity will be progressively augmented with the execution of its next phase. The CCI has already shortlisted two sites to set up the plant. The final selection will be made in the next few months.

Talking over telephone from New Delhi, Union heavy industries and public enterprises minister Santosh Mohan Dev said on Friday that the process of execution of this plant would be launched in the early months of the next financial year.

The sparsely-populated Kathigorah block was chosen for setting up the proposed plant as it has a host of inherent advantages. First, it is adjacent to Meghalaya, which boasts an abundant reservoir of limestone, the raw input of cement. Secondly, it has a network of roads, including a national highway, and is situated on the bank of the Surma.
