Student dies in accident

A higher secondary student died on the spot and two others were injured when a speeding minibus carrying CRPF personnel hit them in Sonari town of Assam?s Sivasagar district on Friday afternoon. The victim was identified as Pallabi Phukan (17). Parismite Konwar of Class VIII and Chinmoy Konwar of Class III were rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

Case filed

Kalain police on Friday registered a case against Chayajuddin whose distribution of contaminated fruit pickles among children had led to the death his one-and-a-half year-old niece Ruma Begum in Assam?s Cachar district on Thursday.

Admissions

Admissions into post- graduate classes of Cotton College have been been postponed. As per the new schedule, the admission to the science stream will be held on September 9 and that of arts stream on September 10 and 12.

BJP demand

The Manipur unit of the BJP has demanded immediate intervention of the Centre in resolving the crisis arising out of the economic blockade. A nine-member delegation of the party met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on Thursday to discuss the issue.

Credit plan

The National Advisory Council, chaired by Sonia Gandhi, has underscored the need to pay special attention to expand institutional credit in the Northeast where community ownership of land is common. It also discussed revival of rural cooperative credit institutions.

Rural progress

Assam panchayat and rural development minister Ripun Bora has asked officials to expedite rural development programmes and implement them by October.

Tripura rubber

The Tripura government has initiated a comprehensive plan with the Rubber Board to increase production of rubber in a bid to rehabilitate tribals.

Fiscal liability

The overall fiscal liabilities of Nagaland has increased from Rs 1,146 crore to Rs 1,924 crore on an average rate of 15.44 per cent during 1999-2004, the latest CAG stated.
