Hopes soar with lease renewal

Ranchi, Aug. 21: A day after Tata Steel signed the lease renewal agreement for another 30 years with the government, company insiders feel the steel major has more to offer than what has been said in the agreement.

The sources believe that something more can be expected from the company as Ratan Tata, the chairman of Tata Sons, has already committed to examine if the company can increase its investments in Jharkhand.

Quoting Tata?s speech, they said: ?Over and above, I think it is our responsibility and desire to work with you to improve the quality of life of a vast number of people of Jharkhand to give them an equal chance to have a livelihood.?

The steel company, with its almost century-old presence in the state, is committed to social development and Tata?s repeated emphasis on improving the skills of the people of the state hints at his plans to undertake welfare schemes on a large scale, the sources pointed out.

?The magnitude of the welfare schemes could be gauged from the fact that the company has already spent thousands of crores for the welfare of the people of the state and has given Rs 150 crore at one go, besides pledging Rs 25 crore for the coming 30 years,? sources added.

Claiming that Tata?s focus on improving the skills of the people cannot be misconstrued as he did not wish to invest further in Jharkhand, a senior IAS officer said the government should feel lucky that the Tatas continue to be in the state despite Bihar and then Jharkhand parrying the issue of land lease renewal for over nine years.

?Now it is incumbent upon Munda to ensure that the novel health insurance scheme for people below poverty line takes off fast and sustains itself,? the officer said.

People continue to wonder if Tata Steel?s generosity stem from L.N. Mittal?s interest in Jharkhand, but none seems to be interested to comment on it.
