AGP chief faces Ulfa ire on letter

Guwahati, Aug. 20: The proscribed Ulfa today accused AGP president Brindaban Goswami of producing a fake letter in the name of a senior Congress leader, projecting the outfit?s nexus with the ruling party.

Referring to the letter, purportedly written by PCC secretary M.H. Choudhury and addressed to the outfit?s chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa, the Ulfa alleged that Goswami had engineered the ?fake missive? for political gain.

The letter had rocked the Assam Assembly on August 11 and 12.

The Ulfa statement today, signed by Rajkhowa, said the AGP chief should now tender an unconditional apology for having maligned the outfit or face banishment from Assam?s political scene.

The ?fake? letter had sparked a pandemonium in the Assembly, with Goswami demanding the suspension of Question Hour.

The letter, on a PCC letterhead, had mentioned a donation of Rs 30 lakh to the outfit and that three ministers ? Gautam Roy, Anjan Dutta and Himanta Biswa Sarma ? had agreed to pay Rs 5 lakh every month to ensure that the outfit did not attack them.

Though the Speaker rejected the AGP demand, he asked the government to make a statement.

Minister of state for home Rockybul Hussain said the letter was baseless and that Choudhury had denied having written the letter. He also said no minister had extended any financial assistance to the outfit.
