Imphal, Aug. 20: A team of legislators, led by irrigation and flood control minister Phungzathang Tonsing, today visited Manipur?s curfew-bound Churachandpur district to assess the situation and meet the students protesting the arrest of six activists.
Yesterday?s violent agitation, in which students set ablaze five vehicles, including four belonging to the police, forced the district administration to clamp indefinite curfew from 11 am.
The team reviewed the situation with senior civil and police officials in the district and expressed satisfaction over the improvement.
The federation is insisting that cases against the students be dropped and a judicial inquiry be ordered into a police crackdown on students during a sit-in protest on August 9 as pre-conditions for the talks.
The team through the local media appealed to the student leaders to negotiate their differences. The members also visited the district hospital where students injured in yesterday?s violence are undergoing treatment.
