Imphal, Aug. 19: Manipur braced for another
spell of unrest with tribal student activists today clashing
with police and indulging in arson at Churachandpur, forcing
the administration to clamp indefinite curfew.
An unspecified number of students and police personnel were injured in the fracas. The protesters set ablaze four vehicles, three of them belonging to the police, and damaged doors and windows of a police station.
The Zomi Students? Federation has been demanding compensation for the families of 11 people killed by security forces and militants in recent incidents, adequate number of teachers in educational institutions in the district and a more efficient administration. The situation worsened yesterday, when the police rounded up six activists for their alleged involvement in some incidents of arson.
Hundreds of students stormed the police station in the heart of Churachandpur town this morning, demanding the unconditional release of the arrested activists. They then converged on the deputy commissioner?s residence and set ablaze a government vehicle parked near the house.
An official said over phone from Churachandpur that the guards at the deputy commissioner?s residence fired at the mob, injuring some of them.
In another part of the town, a mob attacked three police vehicles that were taking the arrested student activists to the district court. Superintendent of police S. Ibocha Singh said all three vehicles were set ablaze, forcing the police to cane the protesters, burst teargas shells and fire in the air.
Five police personnel were injured when the protesters pelted them with stones. Several students were also injured in the melee.
Though the release of the arrested students later in the day restored a semblance of normality, the district headquarters remained under indefinite curfew.
Like the All Naga Students? Association of Manipur, which was behind the 52-day highway blockade, the Zomi Students? Federation has placed a set of conditions for talks with the Okram Ibobi Singh government.
The conditions include the withdrawal of all cases registered against student leaders and a judicial inquiry into the police crackdown on activists engaged in a sit-in demonstration in the district headquarters on August 9.
In an unrelated development, women activists damaged a passenger bus at Wangbal in Thoubal district amid a 24-hour bandh there.
The bandh was in protest against the scarcity of fertilisers in the district. Nobody was injured in the attack, the police said.
Farmers staged a demonstration in front of the chief minister?s office recently.
