Girl mowed down by truck

Pinky Rajak, 8, was crushed under the wheels of a truck in Liluah on Tuesday morning. Police said a handcart hit the bicycle Pinky was riding, throwing her off balance. She fell in front of a speeding truck and was mowed down by it.

Land scam surrender

After eluding the net for months, Samir Roy, mastermind of a land scam in Salt Lake, surrendered in court recently, prompting CID to take him into custody. Roy has duped at least 26 people of around Rs 1.5 crore by promising them plots.

Bloc protest

Twenty-two activists of the All India Students Bloc, affiliated to the Forward Bloc, were arrested on Tuesday for a protest at Writers' Buildings against the government move to 'privatise' education.

Student death

Abhijit Bagchi, 18, was found hanging at his residence in Ramakrishnapally, Rahara, on Monday. Neighbours alleged the Class X student was killed by his stepmother.

Money stolen

Amit Mandawal, 47, of Bangur Avenue, told police on Tuesday that Rs 50,000 he had kept in a wallet had been stolen from his residence.

Motorcycle theft

Five persons, including two Bangladeshis, were arrested in Bamungachi, Bally, late on Monday for links with a motorcycle theft racket.
