Special force for rebels

Ranchi, Aug. 11: A special police force to tackle Naxalism seems to be in the offing.

Senior police officials from six states, where Naxal operations exist, met in the state capital today and discussed about setting up the Interstate Joint Task Force

The represented states were Jharkhand, Chattisgarh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Orissa. This special force has countering Naxalism as its primary objective.

The concept for such a force was proposed a couple of months back and the states had seized this idea to tackle extremists along the states? border areas.

Sources in the department said that, in the meeting, the officers gave the Jharkhand Director-general of police, V.D. Ram, their views and suggestions on how the force should be in writing.

The senior police official has also been given the task of constituting the force. The sources said that the setting up of the force was in its final stages.

?All the officials have given their suggestions and it would be sent to the home department soon,? they added.
