Ball rolling for bowling promotion

Jamshedpur, Aug. 10: Efforts are on to give bowling, both lawn and otherwise, good visibility and make more people take to the sport in the city.

Jharkhand Bowling Association (JBA) members would be visiting the city to inspect lawn bowling facility at the Tube Makers? Club (TMC) in Nildih.

The team will include Bowling Federation of India (BFI) secretary Raj Vengani and technical officials, and they are expected by the month-end.

JBA president Syed Matloob Hashmi, who is also the secretary general of the Jharkhand Olympic Association (JOA), added that they would meet TMC officials to discuss about organising bowling tournaments.

?We are looking forward to get the support from the club officials. Since the clubs owns bowling facility, it is important to take support from the officials,? he said.

The team intends to discuss ways to give more visibility to the sport and streamline the affairs in the steel city.

?We?ll inspect the condition of the rink at TMC. It is possible that we might try and organise some tournaments there. But it would all take shape after inspecting the facility and discussing certain points with the TMC officials,? Hashmi informed.

The senior JBA functionary claimed that the national bowling association has assured all support to the state body with regards to promoting bowling in the state.

?Jamshedpur is a city of sports activities and addition of one more sports would not be a bad idea,? Hashmi observed.

The six-rink lawn bowling facility at TMC came up about two-and-a-half-year ago. However, the sport failed to generate interest amongst the members. The club functionaries have tried in vain to generate interest amongst the members by trying to organise inter-club bowling championships.

V.N. Singh, secretary of TMC, said: ? Lawn bowling is yet to be streamlined at the club. We have tried to generate interest among the members towards this sport but the efforts were in vain. We have planned a bowling championship in October-November. Let?s see how things unfold.?

Welcoming the visit of the JBA team, Singh added that it was a good development as far as bowling was concerned. ?The BFI secretary Vengani had demonstrated the sport during his visit to the club about two-and-a-half-year ago. We would certainly like to meet him and discuss development of bowling in the city,? he said.

Hashmi further said plans are afoot to take bowling to other cities of Jharkhand, including Dhanbad.
