Bala tames Dileep

Chennai: Former national B champion IM R. Balasubramaniam (ICF) tamed his lesser-known opponent Dileep Ravindran in 28 moves in the fifth Adyar Times New Millenium Fide Rated Open Chess meet on Sunday.

Former Commonwealth champion and IM P. Mithrakanth of NLC scored a 33 move victory over Dulan Parera (Sri Lanka). Playing black Mithrakanth castled on the kingside and focussed heavy pressure on the queenside to capture white’s full knight and scored a full point in due course.

Another national star Syed Anwar Shazuli emerged victorious by handling queen pawn opening meticulously against Ebenezer Raj Kumar. Syed Anwar was a pawn up in the early middle game and with careful calculations he cornered black’s king and forced his enemy to resign in 40 moves.

Indian university star Ram S. Krishnan overcame stiff resistance offered by his opponent Eshwanth Dav Kumar in king pawn game which transformed into French Defence.
