Digha danger

Midnapore, July 31: The sea off Digha continued to be turbulent and two trawlers with 24 fishermen were reported missing till evening.

“We cannot communicate with Annapurna or Jaya as their wireless connections have snapped. Baba Bholanath is drifting towards Orissa with 15 men on board,” said Contai subdivisional police officer Debashish Bej. The Coast Guard has been informed.

Mithun crush

Bolpur: About 20 people were injured on Saturday night in the rush to collect audio cassettes thrown by Mithun Chakraborty into the audience at a government-sponsored soiree here. Three women and a girl were hospitalised. Before throwing the cassettes of his latest film to the fans, the actor referred to the youth fest as a CPM event and exhorted the crowd to be disciplined.

Father suicide

Krishnagar: Nilesh Chakraborty, 40, could not bear the death of his eight-year-old son a week ago and committed sui-cide on Sunday. The man who ran a profitable provisions store at Dhubulia, 120 km from Calcutta, and his wife Urmila had to be admitted to a nursing home after their son’s death due to a heart ailment. He was released on Sunday morning.
