Soumyajit, Shamini champions

New Delhi: Indian paddlers Soumyajit Sarkar and K. Shamini clinched the top spot in the boys and girls singles, respectively, in the south Asian junior table tennis championship here on Friday.

It became an all-India affair on the last day of the championship as the hosts swept the honours in all the events.Nepal, Maldives, Bhutan and Sri Lanka were the other countries which participated in the meet.

Soumyajit, the reigning national junior champion, lived up to his billing by easily defeating Abhishek Ravichandran in 11-7, 12-10, 11-8, 12-10. Ravichandran was unable to withstand the power-packed forehand smashes of Soumyajit, who was always in total control.

In the girls’ section, Shamini beat Madhurika Patkar 11-6, 11-9, 6-11, 11-6, 7-11, 11-5.

In the boys doubles, Aniket Koparkar and Devesh Karia beat Soumyajit and Sanil Shetty 11-9, 12-10,11-9 while Neha Agarwal and J. Swarna clinched the top spot in girls doubles defeating Salankara M. and Pallavi Kundu 11-7, 11-7, 11-9.

The mixed doubles title was won by Koparkar and Swarna who beat teammates Soumyjit and Madhurika.

India had also won the team title defeating Sri Lanka on Wednesday to qualify for the Asian junior meet. (PTI)
