Assam slams Mahanta

The Assam government has slammed former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta for accusing the Congress of being involved in secret killings. Government spokesman Ripun Bora said secret killings were patronised by Mahanta?s own government and the present Congress government had instituted a probe into the killings.

Man abducted

Sarbat Ali, the owner of a roadside dhaba under Bogribari police station in Dhubri, was abducted by five masked gunmen from his dhaba on Friday. A month ago, Rs 1 lakh was demanded from Ali and police believe this could be the reason behind the abduction.

Pollution rap

Pollution Control Board, Assam (PCBA) chairman J. L. Dutta has asked Oil India Limited, Neepco, Digboi Refinery and Coal India Limited to take corrective measures for disposal of waste, including monitoring of water quality.

Reallocation

Principal secretary to the Assam government P. K. Choudhury has been relieved of his additional charge of urban development He will retain the charges of administrative reforms and training and Assam accord implementation. J. P. Prakash has replaced P. K. Khound as commissioner and secretary, urban development.

Rehab demand

The Bongaigaon district unit of the All Koch Rajbongshi Students? Union (Biswajit faction) has demanded that the Assam government rehabilitate the refugees belonging to religious minority communities at the places they were evicted from.

Rubber board

The rubber board has adopted an integrated approach for the Northeast during the Tenth Five Year Plan on a village basis. The scheme consists of revitalisation of sick plantations, restocking of poor plantations and creating processing and marketing facilities.

New serial

Guwahati Doordarshan Kendra will telecast a new serial Rupohi Asom Jonaki Batere at 6.30 pm every Saturday starting July 9. The programme has been produced by the Janasanjog, and will portray the art and culture of various communities and tribes of the state.
