Police recover 3 tonnes of ganja

Kohima, July 7: Dimapur police on Wednesday seized more than three tonnes of cannabis (ganja) from a truck near Zhadima on the Niuland-Kohima Road. Two persons have been arrested and the name of an alleged druglord, Baharuddin, has resurfaced in this connection.

The seized cannabis, weighing 3,576.5 kg, was neatly packed in 184 packets. The accused, driver Lungdibo Zeliang, is a resident of Samzuiram village in Peren district while handyman Kechongol belongs to Khuzama village. Police sources said the duo was given Rs 3,000 each for transporting the drugs.

They told the police that the consignment meant for Baharuddin was brought from Kaibi village near Tadubi in Senapati district of Manipur.

Prior to this, Baharuddin has been involved in many such cases. A truck carrying drugs was found to be in his eight-year-old son?s name. A resident of Dimapur, Baharuddin is said to be involved in a 10-tonne drug deal last year, sources added. He is on the run but Dimapur superintendent of police Bidhu Shekhar said they were on his trail.

Interrogations revealed that the accused did not bring the vehicle through the usual Mao Gate route. Instead, they took an agri-link road leading to Kedima and then proceeding to Niuland in Dimapur district.

Seizure of ganja in the state is common and the consignments are often in tonnes. In February last year, the police arrested eleven persons smuggling 10,000 kg of ganja from Manipur.
