Training

Tezpur University recently conducted a three-day training programme on Disaster Management at Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district. The programme was designed to train government officials, who play a vital role in mitigating disaster risk in the state.

This was the third training programme organised by the university under the sponsorship of the ministry of home affairs, Government of India. Flood and earthquake was the main focus of the programme. The inaugural function was held in the conference hall of the block development office. P.K. Bordoloi, professor and head, department of energy, Tezpur University, chaired the function. S.K. Dolui, dean, School of Science and Technology was the chief guest while F. Ahmed officer of Dhekiajuli Revenue Circle was the guest of honour. Dipak Nath of Tezpur University, Bharat Nath, associate professor, North Eastern Regional Institute of Water and Land Management (Neriwalm), D. Deka, department of energy, Tezpur University, N.K. Gogoi, in-charge, National Geophysical Research Institute, Tezpur branch and many other notable personalities delivered talks on different aspects of disaster management. The participants in the programme visited the erosion-prone area, Singari, for field study and prepared a report based on primary and secondary data. Altogether, 30 state and Union government officials participated in the training programme. In the closing session, S.S. Khanka, dean, School Management Sciences, Tezpur University, acted as the chief guest while S.K. Samdarshi, reader, department of energy, Tezpur University, was the guest of honour.

Course

A 15-day refresher course, conducted by English Language Teaching Institute (ELTI), was inaugurated on July 2 by Madan Sarma, head of the department for English and foreign languages, Tezpur University, at the conference hall of ELTI, Assam. The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council is sponsoring the course.

At the inauguration Sarma underlined the importance of enhancing the linguistic as well as the professional competence of English teachers at the tertiary level and lauded the role of ELTI in bringing a qualitative change to English language teaching scenario of the state. Welcoming all the 40 participants to the refresher course, Partha Sarathi Misra, director of ELTI, Assam, emphasised the importance of the course in the context of the new English syllabus and the textbook introduced by the Assam Higher Secondary Council in the current academic session (2005-2006). As the thrust of the new syllabus is on the communicative and functional use of English, teachers at the tertiary level should be proficient in the language, Misra pointed out. He hoped that the refresher course would help them translate the objectives of the new syllabus into action. Presiding over the inaugural function, H.K. Sarma, director of State Council of Educational Research and Training, Assam, urged the participants to teach English meaningfully so that the vernacular medium students of Assam could use the language correctly and fluently to perform their communicative needs in the target language.

Conclave

Recently, a continuing quality improvement programme (CQIP) for accredited institutions was held at Gauhati University at the initiative of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous institution under the University Grants Commission.

Eighty five principals and co-ordinators of internal quality assurance cells (IQAC) of colleges affiliated to the Gauhati University and as well as members of the university?s IQAC attended the one-day programme. Jagannath Patil and K.G. Bhattacharyya acted as the programme co-ordinators on behalf of the NACC and the university respectively. Patil is a NAAC deputy adviser and in-charge of the northeastern region while Bhattacharyya is the director, UGC Academic Staff College, Gauhati University. At the inauguration vice-chancellor G.N. Talukdar spoke of the challenges facing higher education and of the need to ensure global standards in education being provided to the new generation.

Cultural show

Mount Peak English School at Lala, in Hailakandi district of Assam, recently staged a variety show on the occasion of the school’s parents’ day.

Memorial

Saradendu Banerjee, a scholar from the Pachim Banga Bangla Academy, delivered a memorial speech on Dr Pannalal Oswal recently in Dhubri. The memorial was organised jointly under the auspices of ISCRA, a leading socio-cultural and literary organisation of Calcutta, and Dr Pannalal Oswal Memorial Committee, Dhubri.

Speaking on the occasion, Banerjee recalled Oswal?s contributions in the fields of health, education, agriculture, ayurvedic medicine, art and culture and his association with numerous humanitarian organisations. Banerjee termed Oswal an ardent preacher of Indian-culture and heritage and a socially-conscious citizen who took active part in championing various social causes such as preservation of forest and natural resources. Bimal Oswal, secretary of the Dr. Pannalal Oswal Memorial Committee, informed in his secretarial report that the committee was formed a year after Dr Oswal?s death with the objective of taking forward the works that he left unfinished.

Green meet

Saraighat Environment Education Cell (SEEC) recently observed the national environment awareness campaign 2004-05 at Saraighat College, Changsari. A. K Bhagawati, head of the geography department, Gauhati University, discussed issues pertaining to environmental pollution, its degradation and protection and creating mass awareness in the greater Changsari area.

Other eminent speakers were Dhrubajyoti Kalita, co-ordinator of National Children Science Congress, Kamrup (urban), Nagen Boro, principal of Uttran Jatiya Vidyalaya and Gobinda Nath, a teacher from Changsari Girls? Higher Secondary School and D.K. Saikia, principal of Saraighat College.

Coaching

A unique coaching centre, especially for unsuccessful candidates in the high school leaving certificate (HSLC) examination, is at present distributing admission forms to unsuccessful HSCL candidates. The centre has been running for the past four years at Nabagraha path, Silpukhuri. It offers coaching for all subjects by qualified teaching staff. The classes will start on August 1.
