Boy held with gun

Burdwan, July 7: A Class VIII student was arrested for carrying a country-made revolver with an intention to kill a classmate.

Teachers of the high school at Hapaniadanga village, 180 km from Calcutta, alerted police when they found Hasmat Sheikh had a revolver loaded with five bullets in his trouser pocket. He said his uncle, Rahamat Sheikh, gave him the revolver and the bullets and he wanted to kill his classmate Hazrat Sheikh. Hazrat had found Hasmat smoking and told his family members and teachers about it.

Radar shut

Calcutta: Radar operations at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport were shut down for maintenance work from 2.45 pm to 7 pm on Wednesday. Airport sources said the air traffic control officials then switched over to non-radar procedures and continued flight operations. However, some flights were delayed.

Neglect slur

Burdwan: A gynaecologist of the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital was accused of medical negligence after a patient gave birth to a still born boy on Wednesday, reports our correspondent. Relatives of the patient, Shikha Baral, detained Tapan Mondal, prompting police to rescue him.

Medical seats

Calcutta: A division bench of the high court on Thursday set aside the order of a single bench of the court asking the state to admit the SC-ST candidates, who succeeded in the 2003-04 JEE, in the 2005-06 session of the medical course in the SSKM and Midnapore medical colleges.
