Ranchi, June 29: Mecon, the city based engineering consultants, have broken fresh ground by developing and successfully demonstrating a miniaturised solid state cooling unit, which can be used inside battle ?Tanks?.
The cooling unit can also be used as a tool for microclimate cooling for defence personnel working in areas with extreme temperature, like deserts.
This solid state cooling unit, developed by the research and development section of Mecon, works on the principle of thermo-electric cooling based on Peltier effect, Mecon sources informed.
The project was taken up by Mecon as Mark II programme keeping in mind the MBT, Arjun Tank. The Defence Research and Development Organisation chief controller, Dr. W. Selvamurthy was present at the testing. Following its successful test, the unit had been integrated in Arjun Tank at Chennai on May 3 this year.
The efficiency of the unit was further tested on May 4 and 5, and the final demonstration trials was conducted at Mahajan Field Firing Range in Rajasthan on June 8 and 10.
