Mohan to hold monetary levers

Mumbai, June 29: From the Reserve Bank of India to the ministry of finance and back. All in a span of three years. Rakesh Mohan will soon be back in the apex bank, where he started in 2002 as its deputy governor, but now to head the central bank’s monetary policy cell.

RBI officials said that the order for Mohan’s appointment has been issued and indicated that he is likely to be in-charge of the monetary policy department, the section that he had looked after in his earlier sting at the bank.

It is learnt that Shyamala Gopinath, currently the deputy governor in-charge of monetary policy department, is likely to be given another portfolio.

Mohan served the Reserve Bank as its deputy governor till November 2002, after which he was moved to the ministry of finance as secretary, department of economic affairs.

Yesterday, a statement from the finance ministry stated that Mohan will occupy this post for a period of five years from the date of assumption of charge or till he attains the age of 62 years.

A. K. Jha, who is now the secretary, department of industrial policy and promotion (ministry of commerce and industry), will replace Mohan in the department of economic affairs.
