Ranchi, June 24: Mahima Swansi, who scored 80.8 per cent marks in the matric examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) recently, may finally be walking out of the rough patch in the her life.
Despite passing out of the tenth grade with flying colours, the teenager whose father works as a rickshaw-puller had, till a few days ago, lost all hope of studying further.
The girl who could not even afford the admission forms of the different colleges in the capital has found a savior in the form of Ranchi Women?s College (RWC).
Moved by a report published by The Telegraph on the student?s plight, RWC principal Manju Sinha has not only provided her with admission forms but also put forward an offer to provide her education free of cost.
Sinha today said Mahima was free to approach the college if she wanted to, assuring that the college would not charge her for education.
Mahima who originally belongs to Datiya, which is 2 km from Khunti, studied at St Kuldeep School in Harmu from where she gave her Class X examination.
It was after the tests that she had thought of discontinuing her studies as her parents barely managed to eke out a living. There was little option left with neither the state government nor any other social organisation coming to help her.
It was around this time that the article came out and caught Sinha?s attention.
The story of the girl?s struggle moved the principal of the college.
?She just has to come to the college and all her education would be paid for. She would not be charged any fees. If she does well in the examinations, she can even pursue higher studies in this college,? said Sinha. An admission form was also provided for.
Citing an example of a student of her college, Sinha recalled, ?I remember this girl who used to come walking from Namkum as she could not afford the fare. Her father worked as a barber while her mother was a domestic help. She was on the verge of discontinuing her studies when we decided to waive her education fees. Money should not be an obstacle for studies.?
When this correspondent tried to reach Mahima, he was greeted with a lock hanging outside her house.
Efforts to contact her on the telephone at her neighbour?s house, too, failed.
