Aizawl, June 19: The Congress has submitted a memorandum to President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, urging him to prod the Centre for a probe into the Mizo National Front?s links with militants.
The Congress said there are danger signs that the state could be reverting to insurgency the MNF government appears to have a nexus with ?various anti-national insurgent groups in the Northeast?.
?The present chief minister (Zoramthanga) takes pleasure in the company and presence of underground militants, to talk and work with them. He also extends financial and material help to them. Members of the underground outfits have even been provided with food and drink in government guesthouses. A large number of such groups are operating freely in Aizawl,? the memorandum said.
The outfits named specifically in the memorandum are Manipur?s Zomi Revolutionary Army and the National Liberation Front of Tripura. The Chin rebels of Myanmar have also been mentioned.
The memorandum accused the government of supplying arms to selected party workers ?to accomplish specific tasks?. The Congress claimed it has evidence that arms from Mizoram police?s armoury were making their way to these workers.
?The close association between the MNF ministry with various underground outfits can only be for mutual benefit or for some hidden common purpose. The essence of a state is that of uphold(ing) law and maintain(ing) order. Hence, the oath of allegiance to the Constitution by the ministers. To allow, enable and facilitate all conveniences to the anti-national armed groups tantamount to conniving and abetting activities antagonistic to the state,? the memorandum said.
?We wish to forewarn the government about the danger of a relapse to a sad situation of the insurgency period,? the memorandum said.
