Q: My three-year-old son is allergic to milk and milk products. I am worried about this development. Is it possible for a child to stay healthy and active without having milk?

RS, Howrah

There are many people all over the world who avoid milk and milk products. Some are allergic, while others avoid them deliberately owing to dislike or other reasons. Although milk is very important for the development of a growing child, your son’s health and activity will not be hampered if he doesn’t consume milk and its products, provided you give him a nutritious and balanced diet.

Firstly, you could give him a health drink for growing children. Many of these are lactose-free but contain high protein, minerals, vitamins and calories. They are ideal for children with milk intolerance. Check out on such drinks at pharmacies and departmental stores stocking groceries.

Certain health drinks can be taken with milk or with water. For your child, you could try the latter. You can also give him soyamilk. Products made from soyamilk like tofu are also available.

As your child grows older, encourage him to take a wide variety of legumes, mushroom, nuts, soya products and all kinds of vegetables.

Q: I work in the marketing section of a consumer durables company. My job keeps me outdoors for long hours in the daytime. In the scorching heat, I tend to get dehydrated very often. Is there a way to prevent this from happening too regularly? Please give me a few suggestions.

ARS, Calcutta

Spending long hours outdoors during summer leads to both fluid and mineral loss. Ensure that you take plenty of water (at least 3-4 litres) daily. You could also take lime water (nimbu paani), daab water, fruit juices or light tea in between. Take plenty of fresh vegetables, salads and fruits in your diet. These will restore the minerals and micro-nutrients lost in perspiration.
