Ace fencer on Malaysia bus

Guwahati, June 16: Assam fencer S. Ranjit Singh has made it to the probables list for the national team that will take part in the senior Asian fencing championship. The Asian meet will be held in Malaysia from July 25 to 30.

The 20-year-old is originally from Manipur has been turning out for Assam since 1998.

Singh is among the 25 men and women attending the coaching-cum-selection camp at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal since yesterday. As things stand today, Singh, currently the number two fencer going by the national rankings (foil event), is almost certainly to make the cut.

According to Assam Fencing Association official Uttam Kayastha, the shortlisted fencers are training under an Italian coach Georgio Grani at the Imphal camp. He is being assisted by Hemjit Metei and Y. Bholeshwar Singh.

?The training will continue till the team leaves for Malaysia. Only individual medallists were invited for the camp. Ranjit had won silver in the senior nationals at Nasik in February. The Indian team will have around 12 members,? he added. Singh had also won silver in the last national Games in Hyderabad,

Kayastha added that Lalit Kumar Singh has been engaged by the Assam Olympic Association to coach the state fencing team for the National Games.
