Jamshedpur, June 16: The superintendent of police, East Singhbhum district, has issued warrants to arrest three former Sakchi Jail officials over the death of an undertrial prisoner Tej Ranveer Singh in March last year.
Instructions to arrest jailer Suresh Prasad Singh, jail doctor Dr V.K. Singh and a warden Vijay Singh came after the Sakchi police conducted an inquiry into the death incident.
Superintendent of police Sanjay Anand Lathkar said he had instructed the arrest of the officials on the basis of a police investigation and the victim?s post-mortem report.
?I have instructed the arrest of those who were found guilty prima facie in Tej Ranveer Singh murder case,? said Lathkar.
The superintendent of police had instructed to arrest the accused officials two months ago, but the arrest was to be made after supervision by inspector-general of police.
The district police have now got the green signal to go ahead with the arrest of the accused in Tej Ranveer Singh murder case.
Tej, the 40-year-old resident of Kadma, was arrested and lodged in Sakchi jail in connection with a molestation case in March last year.
The undertrial had obtained a bail in the case, but in absence of a bailer, he had to prolong his stay in the jail.
It was alleged that some officials of Sakchi jail had severely beaten the undertrial without any provocation.
After a battered Tej was taken ill, jail doctor V.K. Singh, instead of examining the undertrial thoroughly, only gave him a pain-killer.
Tej was an alcoholic and as he was not given proper treatment by the jail staff, his condition aggravated, leading to his death.
The post-mortem report showed that the deceased had an inflated liver, but the death was due to internal injuries in chest, liver and other vital parts.
The deceased bore marks of injuries all over his body.
The undertrial?s relatives had cried foul in the death incident terming it as murder.
The deceased belonged to Sikh community and the leaderships in Central Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee and the State Minority Commission had voiced their protests over the death.
This pushed the district administration to take stringent action against the guilty.
The Sakchi jail authorities had, however, tried to cover up the incident saying the Tej?s death was a fallout of intra-inmates fighting in the jail.
The jail administration had even lodged an FIR against two undertrial prisoners ? Mangal Lohar and Vikash Saw ? alleging the duo to have injured Tej.
Strong protests by the Sikh community led to the transfer of the then superintendent of Sakchi Jail, Deepak Vidyarthy.
The jailer was transferred to Giridih and the doctor to Ghatshila.
