Kidney tout held in Siliguri

Siliguri, June 14: A tout dealing in body parts of the victims he enticed with false promises was arrested today.

Additional superintendent of police Tripurari said a case had been started and investigations were on.

The tout lured a rickshaw-puller from Ambedkar Colony area here with promises of a good job and took him to Chennai last year. But instead of a job, the victim was threatened and came back minus a kidney, but with four fraudulent cheques.

In August last year, Krishna Hazra, a 45-year-old resident of Gopal More near Deshbandhupara, approached 35-year-old Samir Das. He had seen Das, the rickshawpuller, frequent a nursing home in Siliguri, where he used to sell his blood. Hazra persuaded him to accompany him to Chennai, where the tout?s daughter and son-in-law reside.

In mid-October, Das fell ill and was admitted to a nursing home. He was drugged and when he came to, he found a long scar on his left side. He was told that his left kidney had been taken out and that he would be given money for the ?donation?.

When he left Chennai to return to Siliguri in January, he was given post-dated cheques.

When he deposited the cheques at the ICICI Bank here, the cheques bounced. He was told by a bank official that the account number on which they were drawn was fictitious.

This morning, Das spotted the tout near his locality and caught him after a chase.
