| Hilsa import Barasat, June 11: A consignment of 800 metric tonnes of hilsa today arrived from Bangladesh through the Petrapole border in North 24-Parganas, to the delight of fish lovers. The supply of hilsa from Bangladesh had become uncertain following a directive from the Centre banning its import by road. The Centre cleared the import after chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and fisheries minister Kiranmoy Nanda intervened. Lightning Murshidabad: Lightning struck three persons on Saturday in different parts of Murshidabad district. Eight-year-old Shampa Biswas died at Srikrishnapur village under Kandi police station while Nabakumar De, 46, died at Rangamati-Chandpur under Berhampore police station. At Jalalpurghat under Beldanga police station, lightning struck 35-year-old Sudul Seikh Chitlangia Calcutta: P.D. Chitlangia, former vice-president of the BJP’s Bengal unit, died in Calcutta on Friday evening. He was 70 and is survived by his wife and sons. Chitlangia was close to BJP leaders like L.K. Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi. He was associated with a number of social and voluntary organisations in Calcutta. College clash Ranaghat (Nadia): Six students were injured in a clash between supporters of the Chatra Parishad and Students’ Federation of India at Ranaghat College on Saturday over distribution of admission forms. Rape arrest Sonarpur (South 24-Parganas): Bulu Ghosh, 48, was arrested on Saturday at Karbala under Sonarpur police station on charges of raping a minor. A police picket was posted after agitated youths raided his house. |
