Centre to review road plea

Union minister for shipping, road transport and highways T.R. Baalu has agreed to reconsider Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi?s request to allow Dispur to execute road development projects in the state. Gogoi, who is in Delhi, told Baalu that the project, called Special Accelerated Road Development in North Eastern Region, should not be given to the Border Roads Organisation for execution.

A conference of vice-chancellors of universities in the Northeast, held in Guwahati on Thursday, unanimously recommended constitution of a North Eastern Regional Education Council under the aegis of North Eastern Council.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has launched an Asom Bachao campaign to drive out all illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators from Barak Valley.

GTAC fire

The room of the secretary of the Gauhati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) was gutted in a fire on Friday. No one was injured.

Karbi body

The Shillong unit of the Karbi Students? Association has called on the Assam and Meghalaya governments to initiate measures to create harmony in Lumbdorbar. Altogether 26 Khasi houses were allegedly torched by Assam police and the forest department during an eviction drive on June 6.

New officials

G.K. Bhattacharya has been elected president of Gauhati High Court Bar Association for 2005-06. Apurba Kumar Sarma is the new secretary-general.

Matric results

Boys have outshone girls in the Meghalaya matriculation examinations declared on Friday. The pass percentage of boys was 73.2, while it was 68.34 for girls. Rishika Surana of St Margaret?s Higher Secondary School topped the exams.

Memo to Patil

The Indian Union Muslim League has sent a memorandum to Union home minister Shivraj Patil protesting the alleged harassment and persecution of innocent citizens in Assam, particularly the minorities, in the pretext of driving out illegal migrants.
