Plea for repair of Swing Bridge
Residents of the Garden Reach area have moved a public interest litigation (PIL) in the high court, seeking directions regarding the prohibition of vehicle movement on Kidderpore Bridge no. 1, commonly known as Swing Bridge.
Petitioners? counsel Jaymalya Bagchi told the court on Friday that Calcutta Port Trust (CPT) in May last year had closed the bridge to vehicles because of its poor condition. ?My clients are facing severe problems during office hours because of the closure of the bridge,? the lawyer said. The closure also causes massive traffic snarls in the adjoining areas. Bagchi sought an order asking the CPT to renovate the bridge at the earliest.
he division bench of Justice A.K. Ganguly and Justice T.K. Dutt admitted the petition and asked the respondents ? Calcutta Municipal Corporation, South Eastern Railway and the state government ? to file affidavits stating their stand in this regard.
PIL on poll panel order
Former Trinamul Congress councillor Tarak Singh on Friday moved a public interest litigation (PIL) in the high court challenging the validity of a state election commission order, which prohibits the presence of journalists and photo-journalists within 200 yards of a polling booth during the Calcutta Municipal Corporation elections on June 19.
ppearing for Singh, advocate Arunava Ghosh told the court that the people of the state had a ?very bitter experience? in the past few elections. ?Left Front cadre captured booths and rigged the elections,? he alleged. Ghosh sought an order asking the poll panel to withdraw the ban.

HS marksheets
The Higher Secondary examinees of Mrinal Nagar School in Kakdwip (South 24-Parganas) are yet to receive marksheets, though the results were declared on June 8. Officials said on Friday that the HS council was not handing over the marksheets to the school because of a dispute over the appointment of a headmaster. The managing committee is not accepting Ashok Shasmal, who has been appointed headmaster by the school service commission. Shasmal has filed a petition in the high court challenging the managing committee?s decision.
Electrocuted
Residents of Bishnupur, on the southern fringes of the city, ransacked an office of the state electricity board on Friday after the death of 27-year-old Arun Mondal. Police said Mondal died early on Friday when he touched a live wire after being hit by a lorry.
Coin arrests
Four persons were arrested in Sonarpur, on the southern fringes of the city, on Friday, after four gold coins were found in their possession. Police said the four were arrested when they went to a goldsmith?s shop to sell the coins. The coins have been sent for tests.
Exam postponed
The National Admission Test of Hidayatullah National Law University (Raipur), scheduled for June 12, has been postponed to June 19. The examination will be held at West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences at 9 am.
Hilsa on the way
The season?s first truckloads of hilsa started making their way on Friday through the Petrapole border towards the city. The Union agricultural ministry has lifted the embargo of road import of hilsa from Bangladesh.
Bombs found
In course of pre-election raids, police on Friday found four crude bombs on the premises of a building on Chetla Road. No one has been arrested.
