CPM faces ally woes in Darjeeling

Siliguri, May 31: There seems is be no end to trouble for the CPM in Darjeeling.

This time, Left Front allies the RSP and Forward Bloc have decided to shun a proposal from the Big Brother.

Though the CPI joined ranks with the CPM when the seat-sharing understanding with the three hill parties of the PDF was arrived at, the RSP and Forward Bloc chose to stay away when the proposal was put before them at the last Left Front meeting here on May 21.

Sources in both the RSP and Bloc said the refusal was ?communicated formally? to the CPM top brass a few days later. ?We have flatly turned down the request by the CPM leadership to join the CPM-CPI-PDF combine in the run-up to the DGHC polls,? said a senior RSP leader.

Political observers feel that the request follows from recent political developments which prompted the CPM leaders into believing that a unified Left along with a tie-up with the PDF could pose stiffer electoral challenge to the GNLF.

Darjeeling Forward Bloc secretary Smritish Bhattacharya said: ?It won?t be prudent on our part to join the coalition at this stage since it is not stable enough.?

Reacting to the snub, CPM state committee member and senior party Darjeeling leader Jibitesh Sarkar said: ?We tried to make them (RSP and the Bloc) understand the need to join the hill alliance to make it stronger. Also, that could have helped us in securing a better toehold there.?
