Fraud smell in Aiada lamp purchase

Jamshedpur, May 29: The public undertaking committee of the Assembly will recommend a probe against officials of Adityapur Industrial area Development Authority (Aiada) and the electrical company after finding out anomalies in the purchase of nine high mast lamps.

The irregularities came to light at a review meeting of government departments on Saturday. Aiada officials purchased the high-mast lamps during last financial year at much higher rate than the prevailing market prices.

Public undertaking committee chairman Upendra Das told The Telegraph, ?Each high-mast lamps should cost a maximum of Rs 4 lakh but Aiada authorities purchased it for Rs 5 lakh. In spite of shelling out more, iron poles of two high-mast lamps have collapsed in the last two months.?

Das, the BJP legislator from Simaria, said the purchase committee of Aiada had received quotations from three electrical companies including Philips and Bajaj. But the purchase committee preferred to purchase Philips lamps that had quoted the second highest rates during the bidding process. The committee has asked Aiada secretary H.N. Ram to provide all details on the purchase of lamps.

The committee members were also dissatisfied with the poor quality of construction work undertaken by the public works department in at least two places. Last year, the department built a girls? hostel at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College and a new circuit house.

But, students of MGM Medical College have already occupied the rooms even though the building has not been taken over by the district administration.

?The construction work undertaken by the building construction division of public works department is substandard. I have asked the executive engineer to provide details of the building project,? said Das adding that East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Nitin Madan Kulkarni has also raised concern over the poor quality of work.

Today, the committee reviewed the financial details of the last three years during a meeting with officials of government departments and public sector undertakings.

Later, Das visited villages where drinking water and sanitation department and Jharkhand State Electricity Board have undertaken projects during last three years.
