BRIEFS

Schools robbed

Calcutta, May 27: Two schools and a library were looted in Diamond Harbour last night.

Police said the robbers broke into B.K.Institution, Unnati Bidhayini Pathagar and Karanjali Girls’ High School, 60 km from here, and took away money and papers. Residents alleged there was politics behind the thefts. Left supporters recently dislodged the Trinamul lobby from the managing committees.

Nurse killed

Calcutta: Renuka Paik, 40, was stabbed in Mathurapur, 70 km from here. She was a nurse in a city nursing home.

Hooch deaths

Midnapore: The toll in Thursday’s hooch tragedy at Lalbazar in Bhupatinagar, East Midnapore, about 140 km from Calcutta, rose to six. Police said all of them had consumed illicit liquor at a neighbour’s house on Wednesday.
