SAIL unit restarts after fire

Chaibasa, May 24: The commercial production of Kiriburu mines of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), in West Singhbhum, started today, after remaining closed for 18 days.

Production was suspended after a control unit of the crusher plant in Kiriburu caught fire because of a short circuit on May 6.

Central Industrial Security Force jawans and other people doused the blaze after struggling with it for nearly five-and-half hours. Cable wires and other valuable tools worth crore were turned into ashes. Although there was suspension of production work in some units, but the mines remained functional.

The general manager of Kiriburu mines, M.N Roy, told The Telegraph that the control room became fully operational on May 24.

?Two days before, a part of the control room started operating. Electrical engineers installed the tools on record time. They, along with local employees worked at tremendous speed to bring back power,? Roy said.

He added that the experts from different parts of SAIL had been working for more than two weeks on repairing. ?The spare parts were transported from different plants of government of India enterprises. The engineers successfully stalled it in time,? he added.
