Boy drowns

Behrampore, May 22: Babu Das, 14, who went to the Bhagirathi for a Sunday splash, drowned this afternoon.

Police said the Class IX student of Manindra Chandra Vidyalaya, the son of a home-guard, went to the river for the bath with a friend, but did not know swimming. He slipped and went deep and disappeared. Babu’s friend ran home to inform his parents. Divers were looking for the body till late night.

Doctor held

Midnapore: Bichitro Roy, a homeopath, was held on Saturday night for allegedly conducting an illegal abortion following which Bharati Midya, 29, died. The doctor was picked up from Patashpur, 180 km from Calcutta, following her husband Hriday’s complaint.
