Inter-School Cricket
Guwahati, May 16: Little Flower School and Srimonta Sankar Academy sailed into the semi-finals of the first Dinendra Nath Gohain all-Guwahati inter-school (under-14) prizemoney cricket tournament after registering convincing wins in their quarterfinal ties today.
Little Flower School inflicted a 37-run defeat on Nichols High School, while Sankar Academy drubbed St Joseph English School by seven wickets at Dispur Parade Ground.
Batting first, Little Flower posted 152 for seven in the stipulated 20 overs. In reply, Nichols were restricted to 115 for five.
In the afternoon, St Joseph were all out for 75 in 16.4 overs and Sankar Academy reached the target losing three wickets in 9.3 overs.
Little Flower rode quickfire knocks by Himangshu Konwar (39) and Izaz Ahmed (25) and a steady 19 by Anchal Saikia in their innings. Amit Singh scalped three wickets in favour of Nichols conceding 16 runs.
For Nichols, Amit Singh scored 26 and Nabanit Sarma 15, while Anjan Bezbaruah of Little Flower claimed two for 14. Himangshu Konwar was adjudged Man of the Match.
In the other tie, Vinod Deka topscored for St Joseph with 18 while Amandeep Singh contributed 12. Pragyan Goswami and Rahul Singh of Sankar Academy shared three wickets each giving away eight and 14 runs respectively. Kaushik Goswami also captured two conceding 13 runs.
For Sankar Academy, Rahul Hazarika contributed a quickfire 31, while Simanta Sarma remained unbeaten on seven.
Tomorrow, Don Bosco School play Maharishi Vidya Mandir.
Badminton: The four-day all-Assam open ranking badminton tournament began at the Dibrugarh District Sports Association Indoor Stadium on Monday. About 200 shuttlers from eight districts are participating in the meet, which was inaugurated by former state shuttler Pronob Jyoti Baruah.
