Kokrajhar, May 16: Repoll in over 100 polling stations in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections passed off peacefully today.
Repoll in three polling stations in Guma, seven in Chirang, 52 in Baksa and 49 in Udalguri passed off peacefully, with no reports of violence.
But the Kokrajhar unit of the nascent Bodoland People?s Progressive Front (BPPF) has called a 12-hour district bandh tomorrow, demanding repoll in the Dotma and Banargaon constituencies.
Udalguri deputy commissioner George Basumatary said the repoll passed off peacefully in the district.
?After violence marred the first phase of elections on Friday, security was tightened, with both the army and paramilitary forces being pressed into service to ensure a peaceful election,? he said.
Chirang deputy commissioner Jiten Borgoyari also announced that the elections in the district had been peaceful. Repolling in Baksa also passed off peacefully.
The date of repoll in 16 polling stations in Dotma and 13 in Banargaon is yet to be declared.
The BPPF unit threatened to go on a hungerstrike from Wednesday if repoll dates were not announced soon.
Most of the trouble was reported from these two constituencies, with allegations that supporters of interim BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary were rigging the polls and snatching ballot boxes to ensure the victories of candidates supported by the group. They were also going against BPPF candidates, such as party president Rabiram Narzary.
The Conscious Citizens of Kokrajhar, in collaboration with the World Bodo Conference Durbar, organised a peace rally here today to bridge the differences among the Bodo leaders arising out of the BTC elections.
Local intellectuals and citizens belonging to diverse fields and different communities participated in the rally.
The forum also submitted a memorandum to Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi through the Kokrajhar deputy commissioner.
It demanded that elections to 9 Banargaon (ST) and 8 Dotma (ST) constituencies be completely cancelled and fresh elections held in these constituencies only after peace returns to the area.
Office-bearers and supporters of the BPPF also organised a demonstration in front of the deputy commissioner?s office demanding repoll in 16 booths in Dotma and 13 booths in Banargaon before counting begins.
The BPPF later submitted a memorandum to the state election commissioner through the Kokrajhar deputy commissioner in this regard.
