Jamshedpur: Mohammedan Sporting drubbed Lajong SC, Meghalaya, 3-0 on Sunday to top group B and qualify for the final phase of the National Football League second division competition.
The Calcutta side won the one-sided game at the J.R.D. Tata Sports Complex to finish with 11 points.
At the Keenan Stadium, Punjab Police slumped to a 0-1 defeat against Hindustan FC but still made the final round (with 10 points) which begins here on Friday. Tajuddin scored the goal.
Lajong were under pressure from the word go. Mohammedan Sporting raided the opposition territory regularly but it took them 33 minutes to get the first goal. Raman Vijayan, who replaced Sheikh Habib Ali Mondal, converted a cross from the left with a smart shot.
Mohammedan Sporting doubled their lead five minutes later through K.P. Zubair. Continuing their domination after change of ends, the Calcutta outfit madeit 3-0 when Jiten Rai got into the scoresheet in the 54th minute.
HAL top group A
PTI adds from Chennai: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) topped the group A table with a 3-1 win over Bengal Mumbai Football Club. The Bangalore side tallied 13 points from five games.
