Cop rap for shabby pick-up

Jamshedpur, May 11: East Singhbhum district superintendent of police Sanjay Anand Lathkar today took strong exception to the behaviour of a police officer for shabbily treating a leading jeweller of the city.

Lathkar said a sub-inspector of the Bisputur police station, Sanjay Kumar Singh, visited a jewellery shop, Chhaganlal Dayaljee Sons, on Bistupur Main Road today and picked up the shop-owner against whom a warrant of arrest was pending.

He said the jeweller, who was taken to the police station, was a prosecution witness. ?He had skipped the court summon to attend the hearing as a witness as a result of which a warrant of arrest was issued?.

?As the jeweller is a prosecution witness, the sub-inspector could have given him bail at his shop itself. Instead, he forcibly took the jeweller to the police station, which was definitely objectionable,? Lathkar said.

Police sources said the jeweller, who is a witness in an extortion case, was released from the police station only after the intervention of the superintendent of police.

Lathkar subsequently ordered the Bistupur officer-in-charge Shyamdev Singh to submit a report as to under what condition did the sub-inspector arrest the jeweller.

?After the jeweller was taken away by the police, Lathkar got a call informing him about the incident.

He immediately got in touch with the police station and found out the details. He was furious when he heard about the manner in which the jeweller was taken to the police station,? police sources said.

Sources in the shop confirmed about the visit of the police officer, but declined to comment further.
