Honour for Dalmiya
New Delhi: As a recognition of his contribution to the world of sport, former BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya has been selected, along with Fifa boss Sepp Blatter and former IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch, to receive the International Journal of History of Sport (IJHS) achievement award.
The awards will mark the 25th anniversary of IJHS, a journal on sports studies. The first of the three functions will be held in Calcutta on July 15.
Marion, Tim not welcome
London: Former triple Olympic champion Marion Jones and her partner Tim Montgomery will not be invited to any European meetings this year because of their association with the Balco laboratory in California.
World 100m record holder Montgomery has been charged with serious doping violations by the USADA which has also investigated Jones.
A spokesman for British promoters Fast Track confirmed on Tuesday that the Euro-Meetings Group, whose members organise nearly 50 meetings, had agreed the pair would not be invited to Europe.
Indian girls lose
New Delhi: Indian girls made a disastrous start, falling 1-2 to Malaysia in their opening encounter of the Junior Fed Cup Asia Oceania Zone qualifiers in Bangkok on Monday.
Jawairiah Noordin put Malaysia ahead with a 6-1, 6-2 routing of Tejaswini Datta before Shweta Kakhandki won her singles rubber 6-4, 6-3 against Tinusha Sivagnanam. Shweta and Shivika Burman then went down to Jawairiah and Tinusha in the doubles 1-6, 6-4, 4-6.
Cueist in fixing row
London: Australian snooker star Quinten Hann has been accused of throwing a match for ?50,000 ($94,059), according to a front-page report in a British tabloid. Just a day after he was cleared by a British jury of sexual assault, Tuesday?s edition of the tabloid said Hann had agreed to lose against former world champion Ken Doherty at the China Open in return for the cash.
The paper said it had secret film footage of Hann accepting the deal during a conversation with one of its undercover reporters.
Army wins
London: An Indian Army team on Sunday won the first India Polo Cup in Warsaw.
The six-member side beat a Rest of the World team composed of players from Poland, Britain, The Netherlands and Argentina 5-2.
The India Polo Cup was introduced in Poland by the Indian ambassador to Poland, Anil Wadhwa, after he was approached by the Polish Polo Association.
