Rural sermon

Siliguri, May 7: Municipal affairs minister Asok Bhattacharya today said panchayat leaders are not keen to implement rural sanitation schemes.

?About 75,000 homes in Siliguri sub-division are without toilet facilities. Panchayat leaders demand funds for roads and bridges, but do not show similar concern towards public health,? he said at the Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad.

BJP men held

Midnapore: Police on Friday night arrested BJP state secretariat member Anindyagopal Mitra and three of his friends from Purusottampur in Panskura, about 90 km from Calcutta, on charges of forgery. The BJP member alleged that ?we have been falsely implicated?.

CPM list

Calcutta: The CPM on Saturday failed to finalise its list of 23 candidates for the Salt Lake municipal elections. ?It will be done at the appropriate time,? said Amitabha Basu, the party's district panel secretary. Party state secretary Anil Biswas had said on Thursday that the list would be finalised this week.

Calcutta: Power cuts on Saturday forced authorities at the National Medical College and Hospital to cancel surgeries for over two hours from 9 am to 11 am.

the lights went out forcing CESC authorities to rush to the hospital and repair a local fault. Finally, normal power supply resumed about 11 am. Many scheduled surgeries were postponed as a result of the power cut.

New Delhi (UNI): The Haryana Union of Journalists will provide free homoeopathic aid to all journalists in the state. The union’s president, Mr K.B. Pandit, said on Thursday that newsmen had made the arrangement with the Homoeopathic Education and Medical Society of Haryana.
