BSF assault

Krishnagar, May 5: Barely 48 hours after Kiranbala Das was shot dead by a BSF jawan in North 24-Parganas, three women were beaten up by soldiers last night in a Nadia village.

Residents of Digolkandi, over 200 km from Calcutta, lodged a police complaint today. A BSF officer said jawans who went to arrest smugglers were attacked by villagers, including their wives and mothers.

Boy run over

Calcutta: Mohammed Tanveer, 15, a resident of Watgunge, was run over on Mayo Road by a bus on route 34C. The killer vehicle sped away.

Radio haul

Barasat: Nine suspected Bangladeshis were arrested from a building in Bongaon, 90 km from the city, on Wednesday night. Radio equipment, cellphones and foreign currency worth Rs 84,000 were seized.

Tourists dead

Malda: Three people of a group travelling to Darjeeling from Mahishadal in East Midnapore were killed when their bus collided with a truck here. Over 30 others have returned home.

Tantushree

Calcutta: Tantushree will be closed down in September. Half of the organisation’s 650-odd staff are eager to opt for an ERS, an officials said.
