State stand a boost for mayor
The state government on Monday told municipal commissioner Debashis Som to comply with Subrata Mukherjee?s directives as long as he remained mayor. Som met municipal affairs minister Asok Bhattacharya in the afternoon and sought the government?s view on a letter produced by councillor Javed Khan, which proclaimed him as leader of the Trinamul Congress municipal party.
The mayor is elected by his councillors and can be removed only if they pass a no-confidence motion against him,? the minister said. The notification for the civic poll will be published by May 10, he added.
Couple to stay together
An estranged couple sent to Puri by the high court to talk out their differences returned on Monday and vowed to stay together. Abhijit and Sharmista Sen recalled their happy days in Puri before the division bench of Chief Justice V.S. Sirpurkar and Justice Amit Talukdar. Sharmista had lodged an FIR alleging torture at her in-laws? house. Abhijit had sought anticipatory bail, following which the division bench of Justice Amit Talukdar and Justice S.P. Mitra sent the couple to Puri.
Shatabdi seats
The Eastern Railway on Monday introduced ?current reservation? for the Shatabdi Express from its 57 unreserved ticket counters at Howrah station.
Lightning death
Nimai Sarkar, 18, died after being struck by lightning in Naskarhat, Rajarhat, on Monday evening. Police said Sarkar was killed while he was returning home from his grocery shop.
n another incident, an overhead wire snapped near the airport, causing a traffic snarl on Jessore Road for two hours on Monday evening.
Road fatality
A middle-aged man, Bivash Sardar, was knocked down by a bus near Jinjira Bazar on Monday. He was taken to SSKM Hospital, where he died.
Mishap victims
Three persons were killed in two road accidents in Howrah on Monday. Pradip Belel, 40, and his daughter Jhuma, 16, died after the motorcycle they were riding was hit by a tanker on National Highway 6, in Domjur. In the other mishap, Bibharani Sarkar, 78, was killed when a private bus hit another bus that was picking up passengers in Jagachha.
