April 29: Rumpa Pal and Arpita Biswas, who were found unconscious on a train at Katwa last night, had consumed poison after failing in their school exams, said police.

Rumpa died in hospital later in the night. Arpita is still in hospital. B.R. Bhattacharya, the officer-in-charge of Balagarh police station in Hooghly, 80 km from Calcutta ' where the girls lived ' said they took a train to Katwa and consumed pesticide inside the compartment.

Another Balagarh girl ' Shampa Ghosh, 13, a Class VII student of Radharani Balika Vidyalaya ' also committed suicide last evening after failing in her exam. With her, the number of schoolgirl suicides in Hooghly this month has gone up to seven.

Lightning deaths

Five people, three of them children, were killed in Nadia and Burdwan after being struck by lightning this evening.
